Is Yucatán Flamingo Colonies (Río Lagartos & Celestún) happening right now?

As of Jun 19, 2026, 6:54 PM, peak season now, through ~June 30. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

The northern Yucatán coast holds the largest American flamingo population in the Americas, splitting its year between two biosphere reserves.

From roughly April through July the birds concentrate at Río Lagartos and the salt flats around Las Coloradas to breed, packing the lagoons with mud-cone nests and gatherings that can reach tens of thousands.

In the cooler months, roughly November through March, large wintering flocks shift west to the shallow ría at Celestún, where boat tours glide past dense pink lines feeding in the brackish water.

The flamingos' color comes from carotenoids in the brine shrimp and algae they filter from these hypersaline lagoons, and the densest flocks turn whole stretches of water rose-pink at a distance.
