Each spring the native Yakushimanum rhododendrons (shakunage) bloom on Yakushima's montane slopes and plateaus.
Flowering occurs over several weeks with lower-elevation stands blooming earlier and higher-elevation populations coming into flower 2-4 weeks later, producing extensive displays visible from trails and boardwalks.
