Is Vermont Spotted Salamander Big Night happening right now?

As of today, out of season, returns ~March. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Each spring, Ambystoma maculatum (spotted salamanders) migrate from upland forest shelters to ephemeral vernal pools to breed.

The migration can concentrate hundreds to thousands of salamanders on a single warm rainy night known locally as the Big Night.

Timing is highly weather dependent and varies by elevation and latitude.
