As of today, out of season, returns ~July. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
Each austral winter, South Pacific humpback whales complete one of the longest mammal migrations on the planet — roughly 6,000 kilometers from their Antarctic feeding grounds — to breed and give birth in the warm, sheltered island channels of Vava'u in northern Tonga.
From mid-July into October the calm, reef-protected waters fill with mothers and newborn calves resting in the shallows, escort males trailing behind, and competitive 'heat runs' where groups of males pursue a single female in a thrashing chase.
Tonga is one of only a handful of countries on Earth that permits regulated, guided in-water swimming with humpbacks, so with a licensed operator you can slip quietly into the water and watch a mother hang motionless in the blue while her calf rises to the surface to breathe.
The sound carries too — the long, looping song of a singing male can be felt through your chest from meters away.
