As of today, out of season, returns ~December. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
Sea sparkle in Tasmania is caused mainly by bioluminescent plankton, most commonly the dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans and similar microalgae.
Under calm, nutrient-rich conditions these organisms emit blue-green light when disturbed, producing visible glowing water along shorelines, in estuaries and around boats.
Displays are episodic and depend on water temperature, tides and local nutrient inputs.
