As of Jun 19, 2026, 8:24 PM, past peak, season runs to ~July 15. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
A supercell is the rarest and most organized class of thunderstorm: a single, long-lived cell built around a deep, persistent rotating updraft called a mesocyclone.
The National Severe Storms Laboratory describes that rotating column as up to 10 miles across and 50,000 feet tall, and it can spin for 20 to 60 minutes before any tornado forms.
From a safe distance the structure is unmistakable — a smooth, striated 'stacked-plate' updraft tower, a hard rain-free base, and a lowered, rotating wall cloud hanging beneath the main inflow.
The classic hunting ground is the Great Plains 'Tornado Alley,' where Gulf moisture, dry air off the Rockies, and a strong spring jet stream collide.
Most large and violent tornadoes are born from supercells, which is exactly why they must be viewed from miles away, with an escape route, and never pursued by inexperienced chasers.
