Is Socotra Desert Rose & Bottle Trees happening right now?

As of today, out of season, returns ~February. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

On the alien plateaus of Socotra, the island's endemic desert rose (Adenium obesum subsp. socotranum) grows into the largest member of its genus on Earth — a swollen, bottle-shaped trunk that can reach eight feet across at the base, gripping bare rock like a colossal grey foot.

For most of the year these trees stand leafless and sculptural, storing water against the drought.

Then for a few weeks in spring, before the new leaves come, the bare crowns erupt in clusters of medium-pink flowers, many with a paler or yellow throat.

The effect is surreal: pink blossom floating above stone, set among dragon's blood trees and cucumber trees found nowhere else in the world.

The densest stands grow on the Dixam (Diksam) Plateau and in the Homhil Protected Area, where hundreds of these ancient succulents cling to the limestone.

Because Socotra is one of the most isolated and biodiverse places on the planet, seeing the bloom is as much about the impossible landscape around it as the flower itself.
