Is Sea of Cortez Blue Whales (Loreto) happening right now?

As of today, out of season, returns ~January. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Each late winter, blue whales — the largest animals known to have ever existed, reaching nearly 30 meters and over 150 tonnes — move into the protected waters of Loreto Bay National Marine Park in the Sea of Cortez.

They come to feed on dense swarms of krill that bloom in the deep channels between the bay's islands.

This is one of the very few places on Earth where blue whales gather reliably and close to a navigable coast, so a small-boat trip from Loreto can put you within sight of a blow that rises higher than a house and a back so long that it takes the animal seconds to roll through the surface.

These are wild, roaming animals on a feeding migration: numbers and exact arrival shift year to year, some seasons are lean, and sightings are never guaranteed.

Tours operate under marine-park rules that keep boats at a respectful distance.
