Each year, from January to June, the Laguna de Salinas within the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve becomes a focal point for thousands of flamingos.
This period coincides with the wet season, when the lagoon fills with water, providing an ideal environment for these birds to breed and feed.
The rest of the year, the lagoon often dries up, leaving behind salt flats.
The primary species observed during this congregation is the Chilean Flamingo (*Phoenicopterus chilensis*), which is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
The reserve, established in 1979, spans approximately 3,669.36 km² and is managed by the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP).
