Qinghai Lake's Bird Island (Niaodao) and nearby deltas host large breeding colonies and mixed waterbird assemblages each spring and early summer.
The site supports breeding bar-headed geese, brown-headed gulls, cormorants, ruddy shelduck and numerous shorebirds; peak nesting and chick-rearing occur in late May through mid-June.
