Brood XIX is a 13-year periodical cicada brood composed of several Magicicada species.
In Tennessee it produces dense, noisy swarms of adults that emerge from the soil, mate, and die over a 4-8 week window.
The event is driven by soil temperature and produces locally very high cicada densities.
