Is Patagonian Dolphin Shore Feeding happening right now?

As of today, out of season, returns ~September. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

In Patagonia, Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) exhibit distinctive shore-feeding behaviors, often observed near river mouths and estuaries.

These dolphins are opportunistic feeders, consuming fish, squid, and shrimp.

Notably, in areas like Bahía Engaño and Camarones, they employ cooperative feeding strategies, sometimes chasing and hunting silversides (smelt or whitebait).

Calves are typically observed between mid-September and mid-March, indicating a breeding season during the austral spring and early summer.

This behavior offers a unique opportunity to observe these dolphins in their natural habitat, especially during the austral summer months when sightings are more frequent.
