As of today, in season, building toward peak (~July 10). Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
Every summer dozens to hundreds of free-roaming sika deer (Cervus nippon) concentrate in shaded lawns, temple approaches, and forest edges across Nara Park.
Locally called shikadamari, these daytime huddles are a behavioral response to heat, insect relief, and available shade and human-provided food.
