As of today, out of season, returns ~October. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
Locally called Bang Fai Phaya Naga, the Naga fireballs are brief, glowing orange-red orbs that appear to rise from the Mekong River on the full moon night of the Buddhist Lent ending festival, Wan Ok Phansa.
Observed primarily in northeastern Thailand and across the river in Laos, the phenomenon is the subject of local religious belief and multiple scientific and folkloric explanations.
