Is Monterey Bay Sea Sparkle Bioluminescence happening right now?

As of Jun 19, 2026, 8:54 PM, in season, building toward peak (~August 1). Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Bioluminescent displays in Monterey Bay are produced mainly by planktonic dinoflagellates (commonly called sea sparkle).

When disturbed by waves, swimmers, or boat wakes these microscopic organisms emit bright blue-green light, producing glowing surf, streaking wakes, and sparkling ripples along the coast.

Displays are episodic and driven by plankton blooms, water temperature, tides, and nutrient conditions.
