As of Jun 15, 2026, 11:13 PM, out of season, returns ~November. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
When seasonal rains fill parts of the Makgadikgadi salt pans, tens to hundreds of thousands of lesser and greater flamingos converge to feed, court and nest on mud islands and shallow lagoons.
Breeding is opportunistic and tied to flooding and algal blooms, so large colonies form only in years with suitable rains and pan inundation.
