As of today, out of season, returns ~March. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
Each autumn, fledgling shearwaters and other burrow-nesting seabirds leaving nests at night can become disoriented by island lights and strand in the settlement and along shores.
Local volunteers and the Lord Howe Island Board run rescue and mitigation efforts to recover and release grounded birds and to reduce light pollution during the season.
