Is Île Sainte-Marie Humpback Whale Nursery happening right now?

As of today, in season, building toward peak (~July 15). Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Each austral winter, migrating humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) gather in the shallow, sheltered waters around Île Sainte-Marie (Nosy Boraha) to breed, give birth, and nurse calves.

The area supports frequent mother-calf pairs and active surface behaviors, making it one of the Indian Ocean's most reliable whale-watching nurseries.
