Is Lake Winnebago Lake Fly Hatch happening right now?

As of today, past peak, season runs to ~June 30. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Each spring and early summer, huge numbers of lake flies emerge along the shores of Lake Winnebago.

These are non-biting midges (Chironomus plumosus, family Chironomidae), not caddisflies.

The adults have no working mouthparts, do not bite, and live only a few days.

They hatch from the lake bed in vast synchronized broods, the largest usually in May, coating docks, walls, and shorelines after dusk.
