As of today, out of season, returns ~January. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
In winter, methane produced by decomposing organic material beneath Lake Nukabira rises as gas and becomes trapped as bubbles in the lake ice.
When the ice is clear and free of fresh snow these concentric bubble columns form photogenic patterns visible from the shore and vantage points near Taushubetsu Bridge and Nukabira Onsen.
