As of today, in season, building toward peak (~June 20). Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
Each summer, vast emergences of non-biting lake midges (Chironomidae) form dense mating swarms along Lake Mývatn, creating clouds and 'midge snow' that can appear like drifting white or grey flurries at dusk.
The displays are weather-dependent and most dramatic on calm, warm evenings along sheltered shorelines and reedbeds.
