Is Lake Erie Mayfly Hatch happening right now?

As of today, peak season now, through ~June 25. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Each late spring and early summer, burrowing mayflies (Hexagenia spp.) emerge from Lake Erie sediments as synchronized, short-lived adults to mate.

On warm, calm evenings large swarms rise from shallow nearshore waters and accumulate along beaches, piers, and bays, creating visible clouds of insects and brief, intense local events.
