Mountain avens (Dryas octopetala) is an Arctic-alpine flower that survives as a rare relic in northern England.
Its best-known Pennine population grows on the sugar-limestone of Cronkley Fell and Widdybank Fell in Upper Teesdale, where low mats of white, eight-petalled flowers open across the fell.
In these uplands the bloom runs from about early June into July, later than lowland populations.
