Each winter, when sea-ice in the Bothnian Bay reaches safe thickness, a temporary ice road (Hailuodon jäätie) is cleared and maintained between Riutunkari on the Oulu/Riutunkari side and Huikku on Hailuoto.
The road shortens travel compared with the ferry, but its opening, duration and closure vary strongly with winter temperatures and sea conditions.
