After breeding in the Caribbean lowlands, great green macaws (Ara ambiguus) move upslope to higher elevations in search of food, mainly the fruit of the almendro (Dipteryx oleifera) tree.
This post-breeding mountain movement is concentrated around September, roughly August to October, and the birds have been tracked traveling 40 to 58 kilometers between zones.
