Grandfather Mountain Blue Ghost & Synchronous Fireflies

The mountains of western North Carolina host both of the United States' signature rare firefly displays, and Grandfather Mountain is one of the few places researchers have confirmed them together.

The first is Photinus carolinus, the only American firefly that synchronizes, hundreds of males blinking a patterned burst then falling dark in unison so the whole forest seems to pulse.

The second is stranger still: the blue ghost firefly, Phausis reticulata, which does not blink at all.

Instead the males glow a continuous, eerie blue-white as they drift low and slow just above the leaf litter, so a dark hollow fills with what look like tiny floating lanterns gliding through the trees.

The blue ghost lives only in the moist, undisturbed forests of the southern Appalachians, and its larvae and flightless females glow from the ground as well.

The two species peak at slightly different times, blue ghosts from mid-May into mid-June, synchronous fireflies from mid-June into mid-July, so a well-timed trip can catch one or, in the overlap, both.

Demand is so high that Grandfather Mountain runs a lottery for its limited Grandfather Glows viewing nights, while nearby DuPont State Recreational Forest and the Pisgah area offer additional blue-ghost habitat.

Standing in a black Appalachian forest watching cold blue lights drift silently past at knee height is one of the most otherworldly sights in eastern North America.
