Each summer the Mongolian khulan (Mongolian wild ass, Equus hemionus hemionus) gather in parts of the Gobi and adjacent steppe during the species' breeding season.
Males establish temporary mating territories and attempt to hold harems; groups may contract and overlap at key water and forage patches, producing a locally high density 'congregation' useful for behavioral observation.
