Is Giant Amazon River Turtle mass nesting happening right now?

As of today, in season, building toward peak (~July 15). Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Large aggregations of female Giant Amazon River Turtles (Podocnemis expansa) migrate to exposed sandbars and river beaches during the dry-season low water to dig deep nocturnal nests and lay large clutches of eggs.

These mass nesting events are regionally synchronous but vary by river basin and year, and are the primary focus of longstanding community and government conservation programs across the Amazon basin.
