Deep in the old-growth cypress swamps of South Florida, the ghost orchid (Dendrophylax lindenii) blooms each summer.

It has no leaves — just a tangle of green roots clinging to a tree trunk — so when its luminous white flower opens, it appears to hover in midair like an apparition, its long lower lip trailing like the legs of a leaping frog.

One of the rarest and most coveted orchids in North America, it is pollinated at night by the giant sphinx moth drawn to its fruity fragrance.

Each flower lasts only a week or two, and the plants grow high on the trunks of bald cypress, so seeing one is a genuine swamp pilgrimage.
