Is Galápagos Penguin Breeding Season happening right now?

As of today, peak season now, through ~July 31. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Galápagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus) are the only penguin species found north of the equator, inhabiting the Galápagos Islands.

They are opportunistic breeders, with no distinct breeding season, but typically breed when food is abundant, often during the cooler, dry season from May to January.

They nest in caves and crevices to protect their eggs from direct sunlight.

Both parents share the incubation and chick-rearing responsibilities, with chicks fledging at approximately 60 days old.

The species is listed as Endangered, with an estimated population of fewer than 2,000 individuals.
