In the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, Brazil, spinner dolphins (*Stenella longirostris*) gather in the mornings and early afternoons at Baía dos Golfinhos (Dolphin Bay) to rest and socialize.
This phenomenon offers a unique opportunity to observe these dolphins in their natural habitat, with groups ranging from 5 to over 1,200 individuals.
The gatherings are most prominent during the dry season, from August to January, when environmental conditions are more favorable.
Access to the bay is restricted to protect the dolphins, and visitors can observe them from designated viewpoints or boats in the surrounding waters.
The best time to witness this spectacle is early in the morning, as the first dolphins typically arrive between 6:00 and 7:00 AM, with the last groups departing between 1:00 and 4:00 PM.
The average number of dolphins observed daily is around 270, with a maximum of about 2,700 in a single day.
The presence of a resident population of spinner dolphins in Fernando de Noronha constitutes a particularly valuable biological asset, as such large congregations are rare worldwide.
