The Darvaza Gas Crater is a collapsing natural gas field in the Karakum Desert that has burned continuously since the 1970s after a drilling collapse and subsequent ignition.
The 60-70 meter wide, roughly 30 meter deep crater produces visible flames and heat at night and is visited by guided tours from Ashgabat and regional operators.
