A circumzenithal arc (CZA) is an atmospheric halo-like optical phenomenon produced by refraction of sunlight or moonlight through plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals in high cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.
It appears high in the sky above the Sun, with red on the outer (lower) edge and violet on the inner (upper) edge, and is visible only when the light source elevation is low enough (typically below about 32 degrees).
