As of today, out of season, returns ~July. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.
Each year the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company rounds up the Virginia herd from Assateague Island, swims selected animals across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Island, and thereafter holds veterinary checks and an auction.
The swim is timed for slack tide and is held on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July as part of Pony Penning Week.
