Is Chatyr-Kul Lake bar-headed goose breeding happening right now?

As of Jun 19, 2026, 8:24 PM, peak season now, through ~June 30. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Bar-headed geese (Anser indicus) breed at high-altitude mountain lakes across Central Asia.

Chatyr-Kul Lake (3,530 m), a Ramsar-listed site and part of Karatal-Japyryk reserve in Naryn Province, supports one of Kyrgyzstan's last persistent breeding populations.

Nesting runs through late spring into midsummer, with eggs, broods and active colonies observable from late April through July depending on snowmelt and local conditions.
