Occasionally hundreds to thousands of dolphins from one or more species temporarily join together in a 'superpod' to herd and feed on dense shoals of baitfish.
These events are driven by prey availability and oceanographic conditions in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and are most often reported in fall and winter, but remain unpredictable.
