Seasonal displays of bioluminescence along Pingtan (Haitan) Island occur when concentrations of bioluminescent plankton, primarily Noctiluca scintillans (night-light algae), aggregate nearshore.
When waves or wakes disturb these organisms the water flashes electric blue, producing the locally famous "blue tears" spectacle that draws many visitors in spring and early summer.
