Is Bangweulu Wetlands Shoebill Breeding Season happening right now?

As of today, peak season now, through ~October 31. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

The Bangweulu Wetlands host one of the world’s most important breeding concentrations of the shoebill (Balaeniceps rex).

Breeding in Bangweulu is tied to the annual hydrological cycle: nest-building and egg-laying begin with the onset of the dry season, and incubation and chick-rearing occur through the dry months when fish are concentrated.

Community nest-guarding and conservation programs run during the nesting window to protect chicks until fledging.
