Sunbeams appear when direct midday sunlight penetrates the narrow slot canyon throat and scatters off dust and sand, producing dramatic vertical shafts of light.
The effect is strongest in Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona, during late spring and summer when the sun is high in the sky.
