Is Andaman Sea Bioluminescent Plankton happening right now?

As of Jun 19, 2026, 8:54 PM, out of season, returns ~November. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Off Thailand's Andaman coast, the warm, plankton-rich water around the Krabi and Trang islands can light up at night.

Bioluminescent dinoflagellates — single-celled plankton, the blue-glowing 'sea sparkle' type — flash a brief cold-blue light whenever the water around them is disturbed.

Drag a hand, kick a fin, or watch a wave break against a longtail's hull and the sea answers in streaks and sparks of blue.

It is faint, so it shows only on genuinely dark nights well after dusk, away from boat and resort lights, and it is strongest when there are enough plankton in the water to make the flash dense.

Night snorkel and longtail tours run from the Ao Nang / Railay / Krabi beaches, while the clear offshore reefs of Ko Haa and Ko Rok deliver it on overnight and camping trips.

The glow is not guaranteed on any single night — it follows the plankton, the darkness, and calm, clear dry-season seas.
