Bioluminescent displays along the Amalfi Coast are sporadic, caused mainly by dinoflagellates (commonly Noctiluca scintillans) and bioluminescent jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) that flash when the water is disturbed.
Events are irregular and weather- and current-dependent, occurring in nearshore bays, fjords, and harbors at night when waters are calm and skies are dark.
