Is Algoa Bay Chokka Squid Spawning Run happening right now?

As of today, out of season, returns ~September. Earth Exhibit tracks the live conditions and flags it the moment it is on.

Each austral spring and summer the chokka squid (Loligo reynaudii) aggregate inshore in Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape, to spawn.

The run supports a locally important jig fishery and can be observed from boats and, occasionally, from shore when sea conditions and tides bring squid close to the surface.
